Foreign Subtitles Improve Speech Perception

ScienceDaily (2009-11-11) -- You can improve your second-language listening ability by watching the movie with subtitles -- as long as these subtitles are in the same language as the film. Subtitles in one's native language, the default in some European countries, may actually be counter-productive to learning to understand foreign speech, according to a new study.

(ELT-J)
is a web magazine and ELT-themed blog devoted to classroom teachers and the teaching of EFL.

It is especially for those who teach in Japan and developed East Asia, although much of the content will be relevant for anyone who teaches where English is a foreign, second or additionally learned language.


ELT-J hopes to represent and inform teachers who wish to advance the knowledge of the profession.
